Charles Hillig Jr. and Denise Kintzley each finished in the top-10, leading their respective teams to a third-place finish at the Colorado College Invitational Saturday in Colorado Springs.
Hillig placed ninth overall, with a time of 27:42 in the five-mile run through Monument Valley Park, leading four Bears who placed in the top-20. Following were: Jeff Holt (13, 27:49), Michael Trahan (17, 28:06), Alex Grimm (18, 28:07), Shawn Monk (35, 29:19), Ryan Woodman (37, 29:29), Jorel Torres (57, 30:46), Keegan Specht (58, 31:18), Zane Whobrey (60, 32:09) and Chris Turner (63, 32:32).
Kintzley led the women with her eighth-place finish, finishing the 6k course in 24:06. She was followed by: Kellie Callahan (13, 24:42), Colleen Sanderlin (15, 24:45), Katie Wiederholt (17, 24:56), Allison McIntire (26, 25:36), Erin Apsey (31, 25:56), Rachel Forrest (38, 26:27) and Ema Thake (61, 29:27).
This is the first year of competition for the men's team after the program became dormant following the 1983 season.
With Northern Colorado officially becoming a member of the Big Sky Conference on July 1, the Department of Athletics had to add each men's cross country and men's and women's indoor track and field as programs.
Both teams will take a week off before traveling to Kansas for the Fort Hays State Tiger Invitational.
