Cross Country Program Grows to Include Men's Team
July 3, 2006
GREELEY, Colo. - For the first time since the early 1980s, the University of Northern Colorado cross country program will include a men's team this Fall.
With Northern Colorado officially becoming a member of the Big Sky Conference on July 1, the Department of Athletics had to add each men's cross country and men's and women's indoor track and field, which will each compete in 2006-07.
The Bears last had a men's cross country team in 1983, when they finished ninth at the North Central Conference Championships. The program has been dormant since that time.
The men's and women's cross country season will begin on September 1 when the Bears travel to Laramie, Wyo. to compete in the Wyoming Invitational, which will begin at 6 p.m. at the Jacoby Golf Course.
The Bears close the season on Oct. 28 at Sacramento State, the site of this year's Big Sky Conference Championships. Although ineligible for NCAA postseason this season, the cross country squads are being allowed to compete in the BSC Championships this year because the individual and team winners of the event are not automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. Northern Colorado will officially be eligible for the postseason in 2007.
