Men Finish Third, Women Fifth at Rocky Mountain Shootout

BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Northern Colorado cross country teams competed at the 21st Annual Rocky Mountain Shootout hosted by the University of Colorado and held at the Buffalo Ranch on Saturday. The men's team was third in the Division I field while the women's team finished fifth among Division I teams.
In the men's competition the Bears finished behind No. 3 ranked Colorado, who won the event, and regional rival Wyoming. The Bears were able to top Xavier. Although there were only four Division I teams in the field, overall 16 teams (153 individuals) ran in the race.
Charles Hillig Jr. was the Bears top finisher for the third time in as many meets this season, finishing the 8k event in a time of 26:53; that was good enough for 22nd place overall in the field. Michael Trahan (62nd, 28:20) and Jeff Holt (64th, 28:26) were next across the line and were followed by Alex Grim (79th, 28:56). Rounding out the Bears group was Ryan Woodman (104th, 30:12), Shawn Monk (110th, 30:23), Keegan Specht (30:26), Jorel Torres (132nd, 32:14), Chris Turner (148th, 35:13) and Zane Whobrey (149th, 35:19).
Wyoming's Mark Korir was the overall winner in the men's division.
The women's harriers competed against four other Division I teams, finishing behind the No. 2 ranked Buffs, Colorado State, Wyoming and Xavier. In total 17 teams (140 individuals) competed in the women's event.
Freshman Denise Kintzley was the squad's top finisher again, placing 34th overall (23:24) in the 5.8k race. Katie Wiederholt (51st, 24:15) and Colleen Sanderlin (57th, 24:25) finished in a pack together as did Allison McIntire (80th, 25:20), Erin Apsey (88th, 25:37) and Kellie Callahan (94th, 25:50). Rachel Forrest (100th, 26:15) and Ema Thake (130th, 29:20) rounded out the Bears field.
CU's Jenny Barringer was the women's race overall winner.
The Northern Colorado teams will return to action on Oct. 7 at the Fort Hays State Tiger Invitational in Hays, Kan.
