Providence Earns First Win at Independent Championships

GREELEY, Colo. - Providence built a 2-0 lead and was able to hold on for a 3-1 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to earn their first victory at the 2005 Division I Independent Volleyball Championships on Saturday morning.
The Friars, who were swept in each of their three pool play matches, struck early, winning set one 31-29. That lead quickly grew to two games to none following a 30-27 victory in game two.
But Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fought back and dominated much of game number three, winning 30-22. But after the fourth set was tied at five, Providence dominated the rest of the way, winning 30-25.
Sarah Fleming led PC with 15 kills while hitting .345 (15-5-29). Setter Annie Fiorvanti recorded a triple-double for the Friars, registering 12 kills, 37 assists and 13 digs. Libero Amanda Little added 21 digs.
Anna Machado had 14 kills to lead the Islanders.
