Deffenbaugh and Chapin Earn D-I Independent Volleyball Weekly Honors
Nov. 9, 2004
GREELEY, Colo. - University of Northern Colorado women's volleyball player Erin Deffenbaugh was named Division I Independent Offensive Player of the Week for the fifth time this season while junior setter Corrinne Chapin earned Setter of the Week honors for the sixth time as announced on Tuesday.
Deffenbaugh and Chapin have dominated the weekly awards this season, winning a majority of the 10 total weeks the awards have been given out this year.
Deffenbaugh averaged 7.33 kills and 4.67 digs per game last week as Northern Colorado defeated Utah Valley State 3-0 in their only match of the week. The senior set the NCAA all-time record for career attempts in the match, as she registered 22 kills and 14 digs while hitting .525 (22-1-40) in her final match in Butler-Hancock Hall. The win helped the Bears extend their home-court winning streak to 29 matches, the second longest streak in the country (behind Hawaii's 35). In the process Deffenbaugh also moved up to sixth place in NCAA history in career kills and needs only one kill to move into fifth place all-time. She now has 18 double-doubles on the season, a team-high.
Deffenbaugh was also named Player of the Week on Sept. 7, Sept. 28, Oct. 12 and Oct. 19 of this season.
Chapin averaged 16.67 assists, 3.00 digs, 0.67 kills and 0.67 blocks/game last week. In that match against Utah Valley State, Chapin had 50 assists in only three sets while registering nine digs, two blocks and two kills. She helped the team to a .366 hitting percentage during the match.
Chapin has also won the award on Sept. 7, Sept. 14, Sept. 28, Oct. 12 and Oct. 19 of this season.
Chapin shared the award with Emily Luensmann of North Dakota State. NDSU's Lindsay Shockman was named Defensive Player of the Week while Bison freshman Kari Fagnan was honored as Newcomer of the Week.
The Bears are currently 20-8 on the season and close their season this week with six matches at the 2004 Division I Independent Volleyball Championships. The event is being held on the campus of Utah Valley State in Orem, Utah. The Bears are the defending champions at the event.
This season, eight Division I Independent volleyball teams have grouped together to have Player of the Week awards. Those teams are IPFW, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Providence, South Dakota State, Texas-Pan American, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Utah Valley State. Awards are voted on by participating team sports information directors and released each Tuesday.
