Volleyball to Open Spring Practice Season on Wednesday
March 27, 2006
The University of Northern Colorado women's volleyball team will kick off its spring practice season this week when they travel to Fort Collins to compete in a tournament. The event is the first of four spring competition dates for the Bears.
The Wednesday, March 29 event includes host Colorado State and Denver. The Bears will also compete at Denver on April 8 (against a still to be announced field), on April 15 at Idaho State and April 22 at Colorado.
The April 15 event includes two other Big Sky Conference teams in Idaho State and Weber State. Boise State, a team the Bears played in 2005, will also participate.
The spring season concludes on April 22 when the Bears head to Boulder to compete with Colorado, Colorado State, Denver and Big Sky foe Montana State.
"We are very excited to see other teams across the net again besides ourselves," said Lyndsey Benson, who will be entering her second year as head coach in 2006. "Our spring season is a great time to develop players who did not get very much game experience in the fall.
"Our schedule will allow us to see how we handle competitive situations that you can't emulate in a practice. Our goal is work through some things that will help us mature as a group so they can be the ready for August. It will be a good preparation for us to face three Big Sky teams before next fall."
Northern Colorado was 14-16 in 2006, their last season as a Division I Independent team. The Bears officially become a part of the Big Sky Conference on July 1, 2006 and the volleyball program will be eligible for both the Big Sky and NCAA Championships.
