A&M-Corpus Christi Edges In-State Rival 3-2

GREELEY, Colo. - In the rubber match of the season between the two teams, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi edged rival Texas-Pan American 3-2 in both team's finale of pool play on Friday at the Division I Independent Volleyball Championships.
The teams split the regular season meetings and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (13-14) grabbed an early lead, winning game one 30-24. But Texas-Pan American (10-17) fought back winning game two 30-21 before the Islanders grabbed a 2-1 lead.
The back-and-forth match went in favor of UTPA in game four, as the Broncs won 30-25 to force a fifth and deciding set. Texas-Pan Am built a 10-6 lead in the fifth set, but TAMUCC battled back to tie the match at 12. A kill by Amber Pippen put her team on top and Pippen would later have the kill that ended the match.
Lauren Carter and Anna Machado had 19 kills apiece to lead A&M-Corpus Christi.
Kellie Phillip's 23 kills led all attackers, while Heather Bravo added 20 kills. Libero Chrissie Carrigan had a match-high 22 digs.
With the win, the Islanders clinched the third seed in Pool A and will battle Providence in the consolation bracket opener Saturday morning at 8 a.m. in Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. Texas-Pan American finished fourth in Pool A and will play either North Dakota State or South Dakota State at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the UNC Recreation Center.
