Volleyball Begins Independent Championships With Sweep of Islanders

OREM, Utah - The University of Northern Colorado women's volleyball team began its title defense at the Division I Independent Championshhips with a straight sets victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday morning on the campus of Utah Valley State by scores of 30-14, 30-18 and 30-12.
The victory for UNC (21-8) was the second over the Islanders (15-14) this season as the Bears improved to 9-1 against Division I Independents this season. Northern Colorado improved to 3-0 all-time against TAMU-CC, all three of the wins being in 3-0 sweeps.
During the match, senior All-American Erin Deffenbaugh had 14 kills to move into fifth place on the NCAA career kills list and has a shot to move into fourth place following tonight's match if she can accumulate 14 kills.
Terin Ledall added 11 kills and hit .321 and also had a team-high 11 digs. Danelle Angus added eight kills while Lizzy Rhoads had seven. The Bears hit .380 as a team for the match, their third highest total of the season, including a scorching .533 in the decisive set.
Lauren Carter's six kills led the Islanders.
The Bears return to the court tonight when they play 2002 Independent champion IPFW at 5 p.m. mountain time. That match can be heard on 1010 KSIR and free online at UNCBears.com.
Match Notes: UNC has now won four matches in a row and nine of their last 10 overall ... the sweep was the 55th of the Ron Alexander Era at UNC, and 12th of the season ... UNC improved to 2-1 on Thursday's this season and 4-2 at neutral sites ... UNC is now 3-0 all-time in matches played in Orem.
