Nov. 10, 2005
GREELEY, Colo. - Fabiana Souza had 17 kills as IPFW hit .299 as a team and topped Texas-Pan American in four games in the opening match of the 2005 Division I Independent Volleyball Championships, being held on the campus of the University of Northern Colorado.
IPFW (21-5) started hot, hitting .419 in the opening set on their way to a commanding 30-13 victory. Texas-Pan American (10-15) did not fold, however, playing the Mastodons tough in game number two, before falling 30-25.
When it looked like IPFW would roll to a straight sets victory, UTPA came alive. Trailing 20-18, the Broncs tied the match at 24 and then used a dominating 6-0 run to close out the set and force a fourth set.
But IPFW proved to be too much, taking a 16-7 lead to open the fourth set on the way to the win.
Cynara Martins added 12 kills while Amanda Pfister had 11 for IPFW. Erika Leitzke had 44 assists and 10 digs.
UTPA was led by a quartet of players with double figure kills, with Danielle Holthe's 15 leading the way. Kellie Phillips (11), Stephanie Redd (10) and Heather Bravo (10) also hit double digits.
IPFW returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. when they play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Texas-Pan American is in action later tonight when they challenge host Northern Colorado at 7 p.m.
