Volleyball Cruises to Three-Set Victory Over Metro State
Oct. 19, 2004
DENVER - Senior Danelle Angus had 13 kills and added four blocks and senior Erin Deffenbaugh added a match-high 14 kills as the University of Northern Colorado women's volleyball team rolled to a easy 3-0 victory over in-state rival Metro State by scores of 30-15, 30-18 and 30-22 on Tuesday night.
The win for UNC (16-7) was the fifth in a row against the Runners (12-11) and second this season. The win increased the team's winning streak to five matches and the Bears have won 11 of their last 13 matches overall.
From the start, the Bears proved to be too much for Metro State, who was playing without one of its top players due to an injury. The Runners committed 13 errors in the opening set, hitting -.071, compared to .214 for UNC.
Metro calmed down and hit .286 in game number two, but big runs in each the first and second sets put away the Runners, as UNC hit .500 in game number two.
Game number three was the most competitive but UNC would not be denied, winning 30-22 in game No. 3 and ending the match in an hour and 15 minutes, the shortest match of the season.
"I thought we played very, very well from start-to-finish tonight," UNC head coach Ron Alexander said. "We were able to control the tempo with great blocking and cross-court digging. We established ourselves from the beginning of the match and forced them into some errors. Overall it was just a great hitting performance and a very spread out attack. When we are able to involve our middles like we did tonight, we are tough to beat."
Deffenbaugh's 14 kills pushed her past the 2,300 career kills plateau, as she now has 2,309, 39 kills away from seventh place all-time.
Sheena McLaughlin had 10 kills, but committed 10 errors, to lead all Metro players. MSCD hit only .079 for the match while the Bears hit .360.
UNC is back in action on Saturday when they play a pair of matches in Milwaukee. UNC challenges UW-Green Bay at 2 p.m. and UW-Milwaukee at 6 p.m. Both matches can be heard on 1010 KSIR and free online at UNCBears.com.
