Volleyball Bounces Back With Sweep of Bison
Oct. 8, 2004
FARGO, N.D. - Senior All-American Erin Deffenbaugh had 17 kills and senior Maggie Ledall added 13 kills while hitting a blistering .706 as the University of Northern Colorado women's volleyball team beat the North Dakota State Bison for the second time in two weeks, winning by scores of 30-22, 30-28 and 30-23.
UNC (12-7) bounced back strong after a 3-1 loss to South Dakota State last night and snapped NDSU's (4-13) 17-match winning streak at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse. The Bears were the bookends on the Bison winning streak, as they were also the last team to win there, posting a 3-0 win on Oct. 19, 2002.
"We are starting to jell as a team," UNC head coach Ron Alexander said after the match. "It was an overall good performance and we are getting to that point where our rhythm is starting to flow, so watch out."
The 3-0 win was the 50th sweep the Bears have recorded over an opponent in the past three seasons.
Deffenbaugh's 17 kills pushed her career total to 2,237, a mark that is actually now 10th all-time in NCAA history, not seventh as previously reported (an updated all-time top 10 list was recently released by the NCAA). She did have five digs to move her career dig total to 1,616, which ranks No. 3 in school history; she needs only 11 more to rank No. 2 all-time.
Deffenbaugh's three service aces in game one sparked the Bears after the set was tied at 11. From that point UNC went on a 8-3 run which was capped by back-to-back blocks from Ledall and sophomore Lizzy Rhoads.
Ledall finished the night with another high hitting percentage; she had eight kills midway through the second game before committing and error.
The Bison jumped out to a 12-8 lead in game two before a 4-0 run, which was capped by a Corrinne Chapin ace, tied the game. The set was back-and-forth the rest of the way, as NDSU went up by as many as three before a Danelle Angus kill tied the set at 28. Deffenbaugh had a kill to put the Bears in the lead and a Bison attack error ended the set.
And as they have done all year, when up 2-0, the Bears put their opponents away from the eighth straight time. They jumped out to a 7-1 lead and fought off several North Dakota State runs to win by seven points.
UNC hit .299 as a team compared to .214 for the Bison. Chapin (11) and Abby Mayne (10) were the only UNC players in double-digit digs.
Sheila Parrish had 15 kills to lead NDSU.
The Bears and Bison will meet one more time this year, on Nov. 12 in Orem, Utah at the Division I Independent Championships.
UNC is back in action on Wednesday night at home when they have a rematch with South Dakota State at 7 p.m. The match can be heard live on 1010 KSIR and free online at UNCBears.com.
Match Notes: UNC has now won five in a row in the series with NDSU and cut the all-time series margin to 20-18 in favor of the Bison ... UNC improved to 2-3 on Friday's this year and 3-1 against Division I Independents.
