Hokies Top Bears Volleyball Team 3-1 at Miami Classic
Sept. 17, 2005
OXFORD, Ohio - The University of Northern Colorado women's volleyball team dropped its second game at the Miami Best Western/Sycamore Inn Classic on Saturday morning at Millett Hall, falling 3-1 to Virginia Tech by scores of 30-27, 31-29, 26-30 and 30-24.
After dropping the event's opener to Wright State in straight sets last night, Northern Colorado (2-8) kept close pace with Virginia Tech (4-4) early Saturday morning. The Bears led 26-23 on a kill by Corrinne Chapin late in the set before the Hokies reeled off five straight points, forcing a pair of UNC timeouts. The Bears scored a point on a VT ball-handling error but Erin Brugger had a pair of kills to end the set.
Game two was much of the same as the Bears had a 29-27 lead but once again could not hold on. The Hokies sandwiched three kills around a Bears attack error on their way to the 31-29 set win.
Game three was the total opposite of the first two, as Virginia Tech took big leads of 5-1 and later 14-11. This time the Bears responded, taking a lead at 22-21 on a kill by Amanda Wiggins and not looking back on the way to a four-point set win.
But the momentum would not stay in the Bears favor long, as Virginia Tech broke a 17-17 tie using a 9-4 run to run away with the set and match victory.
"It was a much better performance for the most part today," head coach Lyndsey Benson said. "But we need our key players to step up for the big points and that was kind of the difference in the loss today."
Wiggins led the Bears with 15 kills and a career-high 25 digs. Meredith Alder added a career-high 14 kills and seven blocks while Chapin nearly netted a triple-double, coming up a dig short (11 kills, 47 assists, 9 digs).
Sarah Munoz led VT with 19 kills while Katie Esbrook added 17.
Northern Colorado completes play at the Miami Classic later today when they play the host RedHawks at 5 p.m. MT.
