Volleyball Falls Twice On Second Day Of UNC Hampton Inn & Suites Classic

GREELEY, Colo.- The University of Northern Colorado (2-5) had a tough second day at the UNC Hampton Inn & Suites Classic. The Bears dropped a pair of four-game sets to Florida Gulf Coast (4-1) (18-30, 23-30, 30-27, 25-30) and to Iowa (4-1) (30-28, 24-30, 24-30, 21-30) on Sept. 1 at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. Florida Gulf Coast University was crowned champions tournament with a narrow points victory over Iowa. Both teams were undefeated (FGCU 3-0 & Iowa 4-0) and did not have the chance to play each other head-to-head, so it came down to FGCU's point differential over their opponents.
For the Bears against Iowa, sophomore Kenzie Shreeve led the team with 18 kills while hitting a team-best .364 (18-6-33). Senior Dulcie Stone had a solid evening with 12 kills and six digs. Freshman Ashley Lichtenberg also reached double figures with 12 kills. Sophomore Lauren Carter picked up 43 assists and five digs. Senior Abby Mayne had 14 digs and a pair of assists. Sophomore Allison Raguse tallied nine kills and two service aces for the NC.
The match against the Hawkeyes was an exciting back and forth affair that saw 14 tied scores and five lead changes. The Bears were outhit .348 (63-17-132) to .237 (62-30-135) but managed to hang around with a strong team effort against the Big Ten opponent.
In their first match of the afternoon, Northern Colorado fell to Florida Gulf Coast in four. Shreeve led the team with 13 kills. Stone just missed reaching a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs. Mayne led the team in digs with 14.
In a complete wrap-up of all the second day action: Florida Gulf Coast defeated UC Riverside (30-28, 30-17, 18-30, 30-16), Iowa beat Saint Francis (30-16, 30-24, 30-24) and UC Riverside downed Saint Francis in three (30-19, 30-23, 30-25).
NC was represented on the all-tourament team by Raguse. Florida Gulf Coast's Roberta Paula Santos was named the MVP. She was joined on the team by Brooke Yougquist (FGCU), Ana Kokanovic (FGCU), Megan Schipper (Iowa), Laura Kremer (Iowa) and Brittney Murrey (UC Riverside).
Northern Colorado will now head to the Lobo Classic and take on host school New Mexico on Friday, September 7 at 1 p.m. The Bears will also take on Gonzaga later that afternoon.
