Rhoads 18 Kills Not Enough as Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Boise State
Sept. 2, 2005
LARAMIE, Wyo. - Lizzy Rhoads and Amanda Wiggins each had 18 kills and the University of Northern Colorado women's volleyball team won its first set of the year, but it was not enough on Friday night as Boise State topped the Bears 3-1 by scores of 30-25, 31-33, 30-24 and 30-26 at the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic on the campus of the University of Wyoming.
Rhoads set a new career-high with her 18 kills while Wiggins recorded the most kills she has had since late in her sophomore season (19 on Nov. 7, 2003 vs. Utah Valley State); Wiggins also added 11 digs. Sophomore Dani Veal added 11 kills, equaling her career-high that she also tied in the opening match of the year against Creighton.
Junior Meredith Alder had five kills and 12 digs as she squared off against her younger sister, Mandy Klein, Boise State's freshman setter. Mandy finished with a match-high 53 assists.
Boise State (1-1) took the first set of the match, taking an early lead and holding it for the majority of the set. The Broncos led 18-13 in the second set and looked on their way to a 2-0 lead before Northern Colorado (0-3) stormed back. Veal had a pair of kills sandwiched between a pair of attack errors as the Bears eventually rallied to tie the game at 21. Although the Bears let a 30-29 game-point slip away, a Rhoads kill and BSU attack error gave the second set to UNC.
A service ace by Alder in game three gave Northern Colorado a 12-7 lead, its biggest of the match. But Boise State scored seven of the next nine points to tie the game and eventually take a 2-1 lead in the match. The final set was close early, but Boise eventually took control on the way to its first victory of the season.
"It was a much better performance than a week ago," said head coach Lyndsey Benson. "But we are taking baby steps and at this level you cannot take baby steps, we have to progress much quicker. We didn't make the changes we needed to adjust to Boise State. But we will bounce back and be ready for Wyoming tomorrow."
Jeanette Jenkins had 17 kills and hit .424 (17-3-33) to lead the Broncos.
The Bears complete play at the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic on Saturday night at 7 p.m. when they battle host Wyoming. UW (2-1) was a 3-0 winner over Boise State in the opening match of the event on Thursday night. The meeting is the 14th in the all-time series.
