Northern Colorado Takes Down Beijing Sport University

May 15, 2008

BEIJING, China -- Northern Colorado's women's volleyball team continued its China tour this morning with another first.

A first win in Asia.

Abby Mayne listens intently during a timeout in the Bears' match with Beijing Sport University on Thursday, May 15.

Behind some unmatched strength and a big comeback, the Bears defeated Beijing Sport University in five sets (27-25, 15-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-11) in China's capital city.

Northern Colorado won the first set 27-25, but for the next two sets seemed like a team struggling to find its comfort zone playing in BSU's home gym. A pep talk from coach Lyndsey Benson between sets three and four lit a fire under the Bears, and they took control in the next two sets.

"We're here playing in China," Benson said during the huddle. "So have fun out there."

The differences between the two teams was negligible for much of the match, but the size and power of the players was definitely in favor of the Bears. Once the Northern Colorado players settled down and got their volleyball juices flowing, BSU had little response in the final two sets.

Three more matches are on Northern Colorado's agenda during the trip, but the sites and opponents for those matches are still to be determined. Check back often to www.uncbears.com for match recaps and trip journal entries from Lauren Carter and Allison Raguse.
