Tabatha Knop And Santos Win A Pair Of Doubles Matches At The Colorado Invitational

BOULDER, Colo.- Juniors Tabatha Knop and Manuela Santos won a pair of doubles matches to lead Northern Colorado's tennis team at the Colorado Invitational from Sept. 28-30 in Boulder. During the tournament the Bears ended up with a 2-7 record in doubles play and a 2-10 mark in singles action.

The tournament consisted of a total of four teams with Oklahoma, Colorado State and Colorado also participating.

The doubles team of Tabatha Knop and Santos recorded an 8-5 victory over Colorado State's Lauren Strasburger and Hilary Tyler in the Gold Pool on Friday, Sept. 28. The team, after falling to Colorado's Melisa Esposito and Camila Belassi 8-2 in the second round, downed Ana-Maria Costantinescu and Maria Kalashnikova 8-6 in the third round.

The doubles play in the black pool saw freshmen Jodi Ciravella and Natalia Agarycheva fall 8-4 to Laura Neal and Anette Pohjalainen (Colorado State) in round one. The team also lost their battle to Abbie Probert and Gleisy Torres Torres of Colorado in the second round, 8-4, and to Chelsea Orr and Tara Eckel of Oklahoma 8-2 in the third round.

In silver pool doubles play, senior Karen Groll and junior Tiffany Knop were defeated 8-5 by Christiana Pheil and Victoria Almagno of Colorado. The team also lost to Brittany Baldy and Elena Antakova of Oklahoma, 8-5, and Christi Baxley and Rachel Cox also of Oklahoma, 8-1.

The Bears singles play was highlighted by a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win by Ciarvella over Baldy. Agarycheva pick up the Bears other singles win during the tournament with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 victory over Pohjalainen in the second round on the final day.

Next on the schedule for Northern Colorado is the ITA Regional from Oct. 18-21 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
