Women's tennis strikes for just a point against Santa Clara

BOX SCORE: at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Northern Colorado's women's tennis team was only able to get a No. 2 singles victory from Manuela Santos in its 6-1 loss to Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon.

Santos came out on top of a hotly contested battle with the Broncos' Kacie Wagner. Santos won the first set 6-4 before dropping the second set by the same score. She came back in the tiebreaker to win 10-3.

Other than that, there wasn't a whole lot of success to be had by the Bears' players.

Luiza Xavier was the only other Northern Colorado player to take her match into the third set, falling 6-7, 3-6, 10-12 to SC's Courtney Hull.

In doubles play, Bears freshmen Jill Kappel and Jennifer Whateley came close to winning at the No. 3 spot but eventually fell 9-7.

Northern Colorado will continue this California road trip from Monday to Wednesday, March 16-18, against Big Sky team Sacramento State (Monday), San Jose State (Tuesday) and San Francisco (Wednesday).
