Van Oost named swimmer of the week for second time

GREELEY – After 63 all-time top 10 times were recorded over the weekend, several different Northern Colorado swimmers and divers could have won, but sophomore Courtney Van Oost took home the MPSF Swimmer of the Week award for her performance at the UNLV Winter Invitational.

This is the second weekly award this season and the fourth of Van Oost’s career. She also was named swimmer of the week on Oct. 20 after leading the Bears to a victory over Nebraska-Omaha.

At the UNLV Winter Invitational, Van Oost posted the second-fastest times in school history in the 200 back (2:01.43) and the 200 IM (2:06.90). She finished third overall in the 200 IM and second in the 200 backstroke.  Van Oost added a fifth place result in the 400 IM, swimming a 4:29.95 in the prelims, ranking sixth on the school’s top-10 charts as well as a 58.00 in the 100 backstroke for sixth place.

Van Oost was also part of the 200 medley relay that timed a 1:48.19 for fifth place and swam the third leg of the 400 free relay that posted the eighth-best time in UNC history (3:33.31). Van Oost also swam the leadoff leg of the 200 free relay that placed fourth in 1:36.79 and was just 0.08 off second place, the third leg of the 400 medley relay that finished fifth (3:53.52) and the leadoff leg of the 800 free relay that was fourth with a time of 7:43.35.

Van Oost was responsible for 60 of the team’s 273 points over the three days, individually contributing 22 percent of the team’s scoring as the Bears finished in fourth place.
