Big Sky release
OGDEN, Utah -- Senior midfielder Danielle Birdsall was awarded with her second career Big Sky Player of the Week honor for the week of Oct. 14. She was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week with Sacramento State's Gabriela Trenton.
The honor is Birdsall's first of the season and second of her career. The Broomfield, Colo., native had a part in three of the Bears six goals over the weekend against Eastern Washington (3-11, 1-4 Big Sky) and Montana (4-7-4, 1-4-1 Big Sky).
Birdsall made her first contribution on Friday against the Eagles, contributing to the crucial game-winning goal. The Bears trailed the Eagles for almost 10 minutes before tying up the match at 1-1. Less than two minutes later, Birdsall took a far pass from Ambree Bellin and shot from the right side of the penalty box to score the game-winner against the Eagles to make the final score 2-1.
Birdsall came back Sunday and added two assists in a 4-0 win over Montana. The first assist came while beginning a breakaway score that was the Bears' second goal of the day. She passed the ball up to Juliana Grover who then drove up field, finding Essence Ortiz-Laneir on the left side of the penalty box who put the ball in the back of the net. Birdsall later took an inbound corner kick from Rebecca Lancia and contributed to Chandler Guetz's second goal of the day to put the Bears up 3-0.
Portland State's Kelsey Henningsen was named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week.
