GREELEY – Looking for a repeat as Big Sky Conference champions, Tim Barrera, head soccer coach at Northern Colorado, knew he’d have to schedule several of the top teams in the region in the preseason to prepare his squad for the conference slate in 2012 and he did just that.

“We have a very challenging out of conference schedule,” said Barrera. “We’re excited to host the first round of the Colorado Cup and Colorado at Jackson Stadium.”

On the schedule are teams from the Pac-12, Big 10, Big 12, the WAC champion and Denver, which finished last season ranked in the top 50.

“Facing teams from the Pac 12, Big 10 and Big 12 will go a long way towards helping prepare us for the Big Sky Conference regular season,” Barrera stated.

In addition to the challenging schedule, Northern Colorado also announces that admission to all home matches will once again be free of charge, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Best Western Plus.

Barrera and the Bears host the first round of the Colorado Cup on Aug. 17 when Denver and Colorado College square off at 5 pm and then the Bears and Buffaloes of Colorado take to the pitch at 7:30 for the first regular season matches. However, Northern Colorado has a pair of exhibition matches against the Air Force Academy on Aug. 11 and 13, both at Jackson Stadium.

The team then faces regional foes Denver (Aug. 19), Colorado College (Aug. 24), Utah State (Aug. 31), Nebraska-Omaha (Sept. 2) and Wyoming (Sept. 6) over the next month, leaving the state just once to head to Logan, Utah for a match with the Aggies.

A trip to Nebraska for matches with Drake (Sept. 14) and Nebraska (Sept. 16) will test the Bears before they jump into Big Sky Conference action. Five of the league bouts will be at Jackson Field, including the two newest additions to the Big Sky in North Dakota (Sept. 28) and Southern Utah (Oct. 12)

The regular season concludes with a trek to the University of Kansas (Oct. 26) as a final tune-up before the Big Sky Conference Championship, which will be hosted by the regular season champion on Nov. 2 and 4.

The 2011 team ended the year with an overall record of 8-7-5 with a 4-1-2 Big Sky Conference record. Barrera returns 26 players from that team that hosted the Big Sky Conference Championship.
