Bears soccer falls to Wyoming
GREELEY, Colo. -- It was a cold day at Jackson Stadium where the Northern Colorado Bears faced off with regional rivals the Wyoming Cowgirls. Although the Bears outshot the Cowgirls 16 to 14 Wyoming came out on top with a lone goal for a final score of 1-0. The los drops the Bears to 4-5-1 on the season while Wyoming moves up to 7-4-2.
Northern Colorado played a solid first half shooting three shots on goal forcing Wyoming goalkeeper Courtney Merkle into three saves compared to only one by junior goalkeeper Heidi Owen. Both goalkeepers kept the game scoreless going into the second half.
Coming out of half time Wyoming struck quickly. Two minutes into the second half Emily Layton dribbled the ball past the defender to find the net just out of the reach of sophomore goalkeeper Kirstin Salminen.
Junior Olivia Deadmond held the game at 1-0 after a scramble on the ball in the 62nd minute of play. After a shot was blocked Wyoming's Mara Cosgrove took a shot that barely got past Salminen. Deadmond then made a play right at the post deflecting the shot at the last second.
The Bears put the pressure on late in the game with three late shots forcing three saves in the last 10 minutes including a breakaway shot from sophomore Ariel Cook that went just left of the post.
"We are really pleased with how hard the players worked today," said head coach Tim Barrera, "We created a lot of good opportunities we just could not find the goal. This game provided us with a good preparation for conference play."
Sunday's game was part of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Game of the Week televised on Fox Soccer Channel. The game will be broadcast on FSC on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
"On behalf of the team I would like to thank Jay Hinrichs, the Northern Colorado athletic department and the university for the support provided to put on a televised game, especially Wes Hardin and Walt Francis."
The Bears return to action on Oct. 9th as they head to Portland State to open up conference play against the Vikings before returning to Jackson Stadium to face Sacramento State at noon on Oct. 11th.
