Bears soccer ties Metro State in season opener
Northern Colorado opened up the season tonight with a 2-2 tie against instate opponent Metro State in the first of two exhibition games.
Leading the Bears in the game were sophomores Kimmie Fiedler who tallied five shots and Ariel Cook who posted three shots and scored the first goal of the season for Northern Colorado. Also making an impact for the Bears was freshman Alexsys Tamayo who posted four shots with one finding its way to the net in her first game in a Northern Colorado uniform.
The Bears got off to a good start with Cook scoring only 12
minutes into the first half with an unassisted goal. Cook scored
after the Metro State goalkeeper Becca Maloney could not get
control of the ball after an attempt from Cook. Cook made it past
the defender to find an open goal to put the bears up 1-0.
Northern Colorado continued to dominate the first half with Tamayo
scoring at 13:56. Tamayo took the assist from junior Brittani Knott
and got it past the keeper on the left side to put the score at
2-0.
Before the end of the half the Roadrunners quickly put themselves
on the board with a goal from Caitlin Oliver with only 13 seconds
left bringing the score to 2-1 going into the half.
The Bears held Metro State till late in the game when Caitlin
Oliver and Becca Mays attacked the goal defended by junior Heidi
Owen. As Oliver took the shot Owen dove for the save but could not
grab it. The ball found the net after being kicked by a Nortehrn
Colorado defender at 87:31.
“It was a good first outing for us,” said head coach
Tim Barrera, “We did some good thing and identified some
things we still need to work on.”
Northern Colorado will now move on to face Colorado in Boulder on
Sunday in the final exhibition game of the season. The regular
season will begin on August 22 when the Bears will face Nebraska at
7 p.m. at Jackson Stadium.
