Hutchins Named to Verizon Academic All-American At-Large Team
June 10, 2003
GREELEY, Colo. - University of Northern Colorado junior wrestler Loren Hutchins (Sheridan, Wyo./Sheridan H.S.) was named to the 2003 Verizon College Division Men's At-Large Academic All-American Second-Team as announced by coordinating officials on Tuesday.
Hutchins, who has a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. in computer art, is the 40th UNC student-athlete to earn Academic All-American honors since the award program's inception in 1967. He is the second UNC athlete to earn those honors this year, as volleyball's Teale Goble was honored in the fall. He is the fourth UNC wrestler ever awarded this honor, joining Marshall Hahn (1999), Greg Alexander (1994) and Bart Brown (1992).
Hutchins was one of only three wrestlers selected to one of the three Academic All-American teams out of 45 total student-athletes. He was one of only eight honorees to hold a 4.0 G.P.A. and one of only 10 non-seniors on the team (nine juniors, one sophomore).
The at-large team includes student-athletes from the sports of crew, gymnastics, skiing, men's volleyball, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, wrestling, golf and rifle.
Hutchins completed his first season at UNC this past year and posted a 20-8 record at the 149 lbs. weight class. He was ranked as high as fifth nationally in his weight class and qualified for the 2003 NCAA Championships.
The Verizon Academic All-American team honors student-athletes who excel both on the playing field and in the classroom. The Verizon Academic awards are sponsored by and on voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The college division includes Division II, Division II and NAIA schools.
