Stafford, Olson Capture First-Round Wins at NCAA II Wrestling Championships
Two UNC wrestlers kept their hopes alive of a national championship with victories in the first round of the NCAA II National Championships in Parkside, Wis.
At 141 pounds, Ronnie Stafford scored an 8-5 victory over Lincoln Thomas of Colorado School of Mines. Stafford will now take on the winner of Jason Nestor (Pitt.-Johnstown) and Drew Passley (Central Missouri State) in the quarterfinals this evening.
At 149 pounds, Simon Hoepfner suffered an 11-5 setback to Wayln Lowe of Findlay (Ohio). Hoepfner was right in the match before allowing a five-point move to Lowe. Hoepfner falls into the consolation bracket and will wrestle this evening as well.
At 157 pounds, Brody Olson earned a 3-2 triumph over Jared Lein of Central Missouri State. Olson moves onto the quarterfinals where he will be pitted against the winner of Shad Benton (Pitt.-Johnstown) and Jared Novak (Central Washington).
This evening's quarterfinal matches are slated to begin at 5 p.m. (Mountain time).
