UNC Wrestling to Host Bart Brown/Scott Smith Memorial Match
Feb. 7, 2003
On Monday, February 17 at 7:00 p.m. the University of Northern Colorado and Fort Hays State will host the fourth annual Bart Brown/Scott Smith Memorial wrestling match. The event takes place at Wray High School in Wray, Colo. where both Brown and Smith attended high school.
With this event all proceeds will go to the Bart Brown Memorial Endowment Fund or the Scott Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Bart Brown graduated from Wray High School then later attended the University of Northern Colorado, wrestling from 1988-92 and earning All-American honors. Brown finished his career at UNC with a record of 84-28-5, which ranks 10th all-time in school history. Brown also excelled in the classroom and was a G.T.E. (now Verizon) Academic All-American. He was killed in a car accident in 1998.
Scott Smith is also a graduate from Wray High School, where he was coached by his father Bob Smith (who later coached at Fort Hays State). He was killed in a car accident before his senior season at Chadron (Neb.) State.
"It's a special night for me," UNC wrestling coach Jack Maughan said. "Sure it means a lot to compete against Fort Hays but it also is a way to remember Bart and Scott and realize that something can be taken away in an instant. We can never forget them or take what we have for granted."
Tickets are available at $5 for adults, $4 for students and $3 for wrestling teams accompanied by their coach. For ticket information please contact Jeff Stults or Neil Rusher at (970) 332-5758. More information on the match or to make a donation, contact Maughan at (970) 351-1815 or Smith at (970) 587-0835.
