THIS WEEK: Coming off three duals last week, the UNC wrestling team, currently ranked 13th in the nation, will slow down this week with one match-up Friday at 7 p.m. against St. Cloud State in Butler-Hancock Hall.
UPCOMING COMPETITION: St. Cloud is currently ranked 17th in the NCAA Division II Coaches' Top 20 Poll. Currently 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the North Central Conference, the Huskies went 1-1 on the weekend losing 25-16 to Augustana and pulling off a 30-18 win over South Dakota State. UNC is currently 1-7 overall and 0-3 in the NCC.
Bears fall at Bart Brown memorial: The UNC wrestling squad suffered a tough 24-17 defeat at the hands of Fort Hays State University on Sunday night in the Bart Brown Memorial Match at Wray High School. The Bears split the five matches but fell victim to two pins and a forfeit at 133 pounds. The Bears earned victories from Ronnie Stafford (141 lbs.), Joe Kingry (149 lbs.), Brody Olson (157 lbs.), Jared Deaguero (165 lbs.) and Jason McMillan (197 lbs.). The proceeds from the match will go to the Bart Brown Wrestling Endowment which is a scholarship fund for UNC wrestlers. Brown, a former UNC wrestler and native of Wray, Colo., was killed in a car accident on the weekend of the NCAA national meet in 1998. He wrestled for UNC from 1988-92 earning All-America honors and was named to the GTE Academic All-America team.
UNC LOSES CLOSE ONE TO WESTERN: The University of Northern Colorado wrestling team returned to Gunnison, Colo., Thursday, and let a victory slip through its fingers as Western State pulled out a close win against the Bears, 20-19. Ronnie Stafford (141 lbs), Brody Olson (157 lbs.), Brian Hufford (174 lbs.), Cole Allison (184 lbs.) and Jason McMillan (197 lbs.) all had victories for the Bears, and UNC led 19-11 with two matches to go. Tom Clemen lost a close one, 3-2, in the heavyweight bout, but the Bears were still up 19-14. Wrestling at 125 pounds to end the night, Luis Meza was pinned at 1:06 allowing the Mountaineers to inch ahead for the win.
AIR FORCE FLIES BY BEARS: The University of Northern Colorado wrestling team went down 10-6 in the first two matches of the night and were unable to fight back for a win. The Bears lost 27-14 to the United States Air Force Academy. UNC's Ronnie Stafford, Brody Olson, Jared Deaguero and Jeremy Sears won their matches, but it was not enough for a victory.
HEAD COACH: Jack Maughan is in his fifteenth season at the helm of the UNC wrestling program. During his tenure, the Bears have finished among the nation's top-10 on six occasions. Maughan has coached three national champions, four runners-ups and 28 All-Americans. A 1986 graduate of North Dakota State University, where he was a two-time All-American performer, Maughan has a career dual record of 87-97-1.
BLUE AND GOLD LUNCHEON: The Blue and Gold Luncheon will be held every Monday at Noon at Old Chicago (2349 W. 29th Street). Coach Maughan, as well as all in-season coaches, will speak at the weekly luncheon.
