Bears Face High Rollers In Las Vegas
The UNC wrestling team got a good taste of what the calibar of competition will be like at the Division I level next season at the Cliff Keen Invite in Las Vegas, Nev., on Friday and Saturday.
UNC senior Brody Olson (157 lbs.) had the most success of any Bears' wrestler at the meet. Olson earned a bye and then took care of Northern State's Bobby Mantle in the second round with a 12-6 victory to move into the third round. Olson then ran into eventual tourney champion Luke Becker. Becker is a three-time All-American and the NCAA Div. I defending national champion at 157 pounds. Becker scored a 14-5 win over Olson.
Olson then won a pair of matches in the consolation round against Jim Medeiros (Fresno State), 6-4, and Jerod Goodwin (Central Oklahoma), 13-7. Olson then dropped an 11-0 decision to eventual third-place finisher Alex Tirapelle (Illinois).
The UNC wrestlers will be in action again on Jan. 9 at Minnesota State, Mankato.
