Wrestlers Drop Close Dual To Wyoming, 25-19

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Shawn Hart and No. 19-ranked Reece Hopkin each pinned their opponent on Tuesday night, but it wasn't enough as Wyoming took advantage of two one-point decision to pull out a close 25-19 dual over the University of Northern Colorado wrestling team at the UniWyo Sports Complex.
The dual was back-and-forth all night, with each team alternating wins. The Cowboys started off with a 6-0 lead after the Bears had to forfeit the 133 pound match.
Northern Colorado (5-6) grappled back in the next match, as Richard Lohr (141 pounds) won his third consecutive match with a 5-4 decision over Wyoming's Shay Lawrence to make the score 6-3. Lohr improved his record to 15-15 and 5-6 in duals this season.
The Cowboys took a 10-3 lead after UW's Carter Downing pulled off a 13-1 major decision over Kyle LeValley in the 149 pound match.
Nathan Gerrard (157 pounds) help cut the Wyoming lead to 10-6 after he posted a 9-0 major decision over the Cowboys' Kyle Dye. It was Gerrard's first win in three matches, which helped him up his record to 15-15 overall and 4-7 in duals this season.
Wyoming took a 13-6 lead after UW's Gary Dack tallied a 9-6 decision over Devan Lewis at 165 pounds.
Hart (174 pounds) knotted the dual at 13 after he pinned Wyoming's Dan Barrone 4:13 into the match. It was his fifth pin of the season and fourth straight win. Hart is now 21-5 overall and 8-1 in duals this season.
In the 184 pound match, Wyoming's Bryan Bernall eked out a 5-4 decision over Tim Sexton to put the Cowboys back up 16-13.
It took Hopkin two minutes to pin Wyoming's Malcolm Havens, giving the Bears their first lead of the dual at 19-16. Hopkin improved his record to 23-5 overall and 10-1 in duals this year. He has won 11 of his last 12 matches and has seven pins on the season.
The Bears still had a chance to force a draw in the last match, with 125 pounder Beau Hessler taking on Wyoming's Bryce Leonhart. Hessler came into the match having won two of his last three, but couldn't get over the hump, falling 3-2 in a tightly contested match.
The Bears will return to the mat at 5 p.m. on Friday against No. 25 Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
