No. 15 Wrestlers Defeat Fort Hays State in Bart Brown Memorial Match
The 15th-ranked UNC wrestling team notched its fourth victory in its last five outings Wednesday night with a 21-16 win over Fort Hays State in Wray, Colorado. The teams have wrestled each of the last three seasons in Wray in memory of former UNC and Wray High School wrestler Bart Brown, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident in March of 1998. The Bears improved their overall season record to 4-5-1, while Fort Hays State dropped to 5-6-1.
The match started at heavyweight where UNC sophomore Tony Schunke dropped a 7-5 decision to FHSU's Cody Parks. Senior Jason Romero got the Bears on the board in the next match with an 8-7 win over Derek Mauvus at 125 pounds. After UNC's Jon Nider lost a technical fall at 133 pounds, Simon Hoepfner responded with a pin of FHSU's Mike Scott in 2:16 at 141 pounds. Marhsall Hahn improved his season record to 19-8 with a 7-6 decision over Travis Shies at 149 pounds and Brody Olson and Brian Hufford followed that up with victories of their own at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively.
Fort Hays State scored major decisions in each of the next two matches as Shane Grenko (174 pounds) lost 11-3 and Ryan Guillaume (184 pounds) fell 12-2. That set up the climactic dual-ending match of UNC freshman Jason McMillan and Matt Sledar at 197 pounds. The Bears held an 18-16 team score lead heading into the match. McMillan and Sledar were tied at 1-1 until the closing seconds of the third period when McMillan scored a takedown to win the match and seal the dual victory for UNC. A Hotchkiss, Colo. native, McMillan improved his record this season to 11-2 with the win.
The Bears return to action next Tuesday when they travel to Southern Colorado.
