Bears Rally For A 25-13 Victory Over 10th-Ranked Adams State
The UNC wrestling team knew going into Thursday night's match with Adams State that the Grizzlies would be strong in the opening weights and simply had to weather the storm. The Bears did fall behind after five weights but trailed by a count of 13-4 before rallying for a dramatic 25-13 victory over the 10th-ranked Grizzlies.
Adams State (3-5 overall) jumped out to an early lead behind #5 Adam Mars (133 lbs.), #2 Shane Barnes (141 lbs.), #4 Andy Messersmith (149 lbs.) and #4 Travis Koppenhafer (157 lbs.) and held a 13-4 advantage at the intermission. The Bears captured a major decision from 125-pounder Mark Hastings to open the match.
UNC (2-5 overall) had its back against the wall but seemed to flourish with the pressure on. Jared Deaguero (165 lbs.) started the comeback with a 15-0 technical fall (6:52) over ASC's Scott Cleve. Tanner Linsacum continued the Bears' momentum with a 6-2 decision over Don Ortega. Linsacum's victory pulled UNC within one-point of the Grizzlies at 13-12.
The junior, who also is a member of the UNC football squad, pinned Manny Pacillias in 3:57 to give UNC an unsurmountable 22-13 advantage.
Redshirt freshman Dusty Hoffschneider, another member of the UNC football team, finished off the Grizzlies with a 3-1 win over Dustin Sullivan.
The Bears will continue their homestand with a match on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Colorado Mines in Butler-Hancock Hall.
