Northern Colorado Wrestling unveils 2013-14 schedule

GREELEY – Northern Colorado Wrestling coach Ben Cherrington doesn't shy away from competition, and it only takes one look at the upcoming season's schedule to prove it.
Cherrington released his team's 2013-14 schedule last week, and it is not for the faint of heart as it features wrestling powerhouses in Oklahoma State, Northwestern and Boise State. The Bears will also dual Arizona State and Cal Poly, both teams from a competitive PAC-12 Conference, as well as their usual slate of teams in the Western Wrestling Conference.
With eight home duals, not including the annual Old Chicago Open and the dual with Northwestern which is to be held at Legacy High School in Broomfield, Cherrington is hopeful for a loud and successful season in Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.
"We are really looking forward to our home schedule," Cherrington said. "We have some great events and great out-of-conference teams coming to wrestle us close to home in Oklahoma State, Northwestern and Cal Poly. It's the best home schedule we have had in years, something I hope fans and alumni are as excited about as we are."
Cherrington also noted a difference in scheduling from years past that he hopes will keep his team strong throughout the long season.
"We really tried to tailor our schedule this season to the type of team we have," he said. "We are hoping that adding dual meets and reducing the early tournaments will keep our guys fresh and healthy through the early part of the season when most injuries tend to occur."
The Bears are excited about the possibility of a return to the postseason, and by all indications of the schedule, preparation for the postseason is the forefront concern.
"The schedule will be challenging for our young team, but will provide them with many opportunities to wrestle some of the best competition in the country and see where they are at in comparison," Cherrington said.
