Five grapplers earn academic honors

OREM, Utah – The awards continue to roll in for Northern Colorado student-athletes as the Western Wrestling Conference has announced its 2012 honorees for both the All-Academic Team and the Coaches’ Honor Roll.

Senior Gabe Burak and redshirt freshman Charlie McMartin were both named to the All-Academic Team, while junior Jacob Milewski, junior Jesse Nielsen and sophomore Josh Van Tine were all named to the Coaches’ Honor Roll.

To qualify for the All-Academic team, student-athletes had to secure a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average, be a starter or key reserve and be a sophomore or higher in academic standing.  The Coaches’ Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes who have maintained a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Burak (Colorado Springs, Colo.) completed his career by advancing to the NCAA Championship. He spent four seasons at Penn before joining the Bears for graduate school. In his final campaign he posted a record of 22-5 and was 12-1 in duals. All four of Burak’s losses during the year were to nationally-ranked grapplers, including three losses to top five wrestlers. He also earned WWC Second Team All-Conference honors earlier in the season. Burak is working on his master’s degree in education.

McMartin (Boise, Idaho) spent his first official season on the mat for the Bears at 157 pounds. He went 12-18 overall, but was just 1-12 in duals. McMartin did post a 1-2 record at the NCAA West Regional, getting a major decision victory in the second round over South Dakota State’s Nick Flynn. McMartin is majoring in English secondary teaching.

Milewski, a junior from Denver, wrestled eight of his nine bouts at 157 pounds, while in his only dual he competed at 149 pounds in a 6-3 loss to Drexel’s Shane Fenningham. Milewski is working towards his bachelor’s degree in nutrition.

Nielsen is a junior college transfer from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, majoring in nutrition. During the 2012 season with the Bears he redshirted and has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Van Tine spent his redshirt freshman year at 174 pounds. The Broomfield, Colo., native went 5-16 on the season with a 2-10 mark in duals.
