Wrestling Wins Second-Straight

GREELEY, Colo. - For the second-straight home match, the Northern Colorado wrestling team won seven of 10 weight classes en route to a victory against a Western Wrestling Conference foe. On Sunday afternoon, the Bears defeated South Dakota State, 29-15 to improve to 2-3 in league action and 3-13 on the season.

"Any time you can get a win it's good for the team," said Head Coach Ben Cherrington. "With our schedule earlier in the season - we looked forward to these at home because we knew they would be competitive. I thought the team looked a little bit flat today, but we got a win."

The match started at 165 pounds, where freshman Kevin O'Brien won his third straight bout with a 10-0 major decision over Seth Moe. Brandon Kammerzell then posted a major decision of his own, winning 12-3 over Mark Wermersen to give the Bears an 8-0 advantage.

South Dakota State won the next two weight classes for a 12-8 lead.

Senior Justin Tuell, wrestling in his next-to-last home meet, won a 3-0 decision at heavyweight but the Jackrabbits answered as Aaron Pickrel won a 3-2 decision over Tony Mustari at 125 pounds to make the score 15-11.

Sophomore Brett Bahe tallied a pin in just 33 seconds for six team points and the Bears regained the lead for good. Bahe pinned Tyler Johnson at 133 pounds for his second-straight victory.

Senior Kenny Hashimoto won a 6-4 decision over Dustin Walraven, freshman Justin Gonzales won a 6-3 decision over Nick Hagar at 149 pounds and junior Justin Gaethje continued his dominance with a technical fall, 21-5 win in 4:10 over Nick Flynn to conclude the match.

The final home match and regular match of the season will be Wednesday as the Bears host Utah Valley at 7:00 p.m. in Butler-Hancock.
