Wrestling Drops Final Dual Of Season To Wyoming

GREELEY, Colo. - In the final dual of the year, the Northern Colorado wrestling team dropped a 21-15 match to Wyoming. With the win, the Cowboys secure at least a portion of the Western Wrestling Conference title. The Bears move to 3-3 in league action and 5-11-1 on the season.

"We haven't wrestled in almost two weeks," said Head Coach Jack Maughan. "Tonight I think we did some things that were indicative of that. We got our weight a little bit out of control, we had two people cramp. "

Wyoming won the first three bouts of the evening, as the match started at heavyweight. Justin Tuell lost a 6-1 decision, junior Tony Mustari dropped an 8-2 decision at 125 pounds and Brett Bahe lost an 8-7 overtime decision.

"We knew the critical match tonight was at 125 pounds," stated Maughan. "Sometimes Tony wrestles better on the road than at home, and I don't know why. But that was one that we definitely felt like we should have won."

The Bears got on the board as junior Kenny Hashimoto, at 141 pounds, pinned Cole Dallaserra in just 0:56. Freshman Mitchell Polkowske won his 26th bout of the year with an 8-3 decision to tie the dual at 9-9. Sophomore Justin Gaethje at 157-pounds, won his 10th straight match with a 5-4 decision to give the Bears the 12-9 lead.

Wyoming won both the 174 and 184 weight classes for the 21-12 advantage before freshman Eric Brennan won a 9-8 decision at 197 pounds for the final 21-15 score.

"Eric (Brennan) has really stepped up," continued Maughan. "He and Patrick Carey have both been battling at 197, and the competition there has benefitted them both. I'm happy with both Patrick and Eric, but Eric has stepped up and got a big win for us tonight."

Northern Colorado now turns its attention towards the NCAA West Regionals on March 7. The Bears will host the event, which also serves as the Western Wrestling Conference Championship and is the way wrestlers advance to the NCAA Championship. Tickets are available online at www.uncbears.com.
