Women's Golfers Rope In A Ninth
April 8, 2008
CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Northern Colorado's womens' golf team shot its lowest round of the tournament during the third round of the 2008 Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Tuesday, April 8.
But the Bears still fell a spot in the final team standings.
Northern Colorado came into Tuesday eighth out of 16 teams after finishing 30 strokes behind event leader, and Big Sky team, Eastern Washington on Monday, April 7. But the Bears' 315 in the tournament's final 18 holes dropped them to ninth with a 956 (+92) three-round team total -- right behind Big Sky foe Montana (952; +88).
Eastern Washington maintained its first-day lead on Tuesday and edged out the host Cowgirls for event honors in the second-annual tournament with a 912 (+48) three-round total.
Individually, Jenny Henderson had the best tournament for the Bears. She entered Tuesday's final 18 holes tied for 25th, but her 1-over-par 73 in round three catapulted her all the way to a tie for 13th. In all, Henderson finished +15 for the tournament with rounds of 80 and 78 to go along with the 73.
Heather Daviner was the Bears' second-highest finisher, coming in tied for 37th with a 241 (82, 78, 81). Also competing for the Bears were Katie Avery, who tied for 42nd (77, 83, 83); Shayna Godfrey, tied for 48th (83, 80, 82); and Abby McNeley, tied for 68th (89, 83, 79.).
Northern Colorado will next compete in the Big Sky Preview women's golf tournament on Thursday, April 10, at Foothills Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz. The 18-hole tournament will serve as a primer for the upcoming conference championship, which will be played at Foothills from Monday to Tuesday, April 21 to 23. Eight of the nine Big Sky teams will compete in the event, which will also include a practice round on Wednesday, April 9. Portland State is the only Big Sky team not competing in the Preview, because the Vikings are set to compete in a tournament at Stanford on Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12.
