Women's Golf tabbed fifth in Big Sky preseason poll

OGDEN, Utah -- Northern Colorado's women's golf program received 32 points Tuesday in the Big Sky Conference Women's Golf Preseason Poll and drew the fifth spot in a vote of the league's nine head coaches.

Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.

The Bears finished a program-best third in the league last season and return every member who participated in last years' Championship, including now-junior Carleigh Silvers, who earned an impressive third-place individual finish.

They came in Tuesday ahead of Weber State (29 points), Montana State (27), Eastern Washington (15) and Idaho State (eight) but behind preseason favorite Sacramento State (58), Northern Arizona (55), Portland State (52) and Montana (48).

This year's 54-hole Big Sky Conference Women's Golf Championship will be played Sunday to Tuesday, April 22 to 24 at Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz. Portland State won last year's championship with a tournament-record 880 team score.

Aside from Silvers, Northern Colorado will return in 2012 a veteran group, led by senior Ali Nelson, the 2009 Big Sky Conference individual champion. Also back this year will be Silvers' sister Chelsea, who had a pair of top-20 finishes last season, including finishing in a tie for 19th at the Big Sky Championship.
