Women's Basketball Finishes As Runner-Up At Nugget Classic

RENO, Nev. - The University of Northern Colorado women's basketball team captured its second runner-up tournament honor of the season after stumbling 69-48 to Gonzaga on Saturday at the Nugget Classic.

Junior Heather Barbour had a team-high 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Freshman Jabrenta Hubbard tallied 10 points and three steals.

The Bears (4-3) had trouble keeping up with the physical play of the Bulldogs as Gonzaga out-rebounded Northern Colorado 47-34. Northern Colorado had trouble finding the net as it shot 24.6 percent from the field, including 8-of-33 from 3-point range. Gonzaga countered with 49 percent shooting, and the Bears were not able to get within single digits of the Bulldogs' lead the entire game.

The Bulldogs (3-5) jumped out to a 32-9 lead with 4:13 left in the first half, but the Bears shifted the momentum as they outscored the Bulldogs 11-8 for the remainder of the half, cutting Gonzaga's halftime lead to 36-20.

Gonzaga came out in the second half and extended its lead to 43-20, but Northern Colorado made it a game with a 15-3 run to cut the Gonzaga lead to 46-35 with 11:10 remaining in the game. The Bulldogs' Katie Ridenour answered with a 3-pointer to drive the Bears' comeback to a screeching halt. The trey proved to be the spark Gonzaga needed to close out the game, as the Bulldogs outscored the Bears 23-13 the rest of the game.

Junior Jena Fosdick dropped in nine points and was named to the Nugget Classic All-Tournament team.

Northern Colorado will jump back into action at 2 p.m. MT next Saturday against the Wyoming Cowgirls in Laramie, Wyo. The Bears fell 64-39 in last season's contest in Greeley.
