Women's Basketball Wins Exhibition, 76-59

Greeley, COLO. - The University of Northern Colorado women's basketball team started its season off on the right foot, defeating Colorado School of Mines 76-59 in an exhibition game in Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion this evening.


Junior guard Whitley Cox, the only player on the roster to see extensive action last season, led all scorers with 23 points and had a team-high six assists to go along with seven rebounds. Senior center Danielle Hagen, playing in her first game in over year after missing the entire 2006-07 season, led the Bears with nine rebounds, including five on the offensive end of the floor. Freshman guard Kate Kevorken came off the bench to add 16 points, including three three-pointers in her first collegiate contest. Freshman guard Courtney Stoermer also chipped in five assists and four steals in her first game at the college level.


Colorado School of Mines was led by Emily Dalton with 11 points, while Brecca Gaffney tied for the game lead with nine rebounds and guard Peanut Eickelman led the Miners with six assists.


Northern Colorado nailed 12 three-point attempts on the evening, shooting 40% (12-30) from beyond the arc and had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio with 19 assists and just 11 turnovers. The Bears also had eight steals and one blocked shot. The Miners shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) from the field with 15 assists, two blocks and three steals.


The Bears begin their season on November 11 against San Francisco in Butler-Hancock. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
