Jan. 2, 2006
GREELEY, Colo. - Jabrenta Hubbard had 17 points, 10 assists and five steals for her first career double-double as the University of Northern Colorado women's basketball team rolled over Mesa State on Monday night, 86-58.
Northern Colorado (6-8) forced 25 Mesa State turnovers and shot 61.3 percent in the first half to put the game out of reach early. The Bears also had a season-high 28 assists, which forced the Mavericks out of their defensive game all night.
Mesa State (4-7) put a scare into Northern Colorado early, going on a 7-2 run to begin the game. But the Bears used deadly 3-point shooting to go on a 25-4 run to take a 27-11 lead with 9:52 left in the first half. During the run, junior Jena Fosdick drained three straight trifectas. Northern Colorado continued to put on the pressure and outscored Mesa State 23-9 the rest of the half to take a 50-20 halftime lead. The Mavericks could not keep pace with the hot shooting of the Bears in the half, shooting just 22.6 percent from the floor.
In the second half, the Bears were relentless. At the 8:48 mark, Northern Colorado took its largest lead of the contest at 83-40. The Mavericks were able to put together an 18-3 run to close out the game, but it proved to be too little, too late. Heather Barbour and Cindy McCarroll scored eight points in the half.
Northern Colorado will try to carry its momentum to a face off against future Big Sky Conference rival Weber State at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The game will be broadcast live on The Bears Radio Network (Flagship Station: 1310-AM KFKA in Greeley) and can be accessed free of charge on UNCBears.com.
