GREELEY, Colo. -- The Northern Colorado women's basketball team begins the 2009-10 campaign on Monday evening with its first of two exhibition games. The Bears host Regis at 7:05 p.m. in Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion and admission is free.
This is the second-straight season the Bears have begun exhibition play against Regis with the team winning 85-71 a year ago. It began a 12-18 season for the team where four starters return for 09-10.
Junior guard Courtney Stoermer was a Big Sky All-Conference Second Team selection last year, the only sophomore named to either the first or second team and looks to lead the Bears along with seniors Lizzie Cooper and Whitley Cox. Four other players who started in at least one game return to the roster.
A year ago against Regis five players scored in double figures, led by 14 from Jamie Schroeder, the lone graduated player. Cox scored 13, Kaisha Brown scored 12, Stoermer had 11 and Cassie Lambrecht added 10 as the Bears shot .462 from the field in the 14-point victory. Schroeder also led the team with nine rebounds while Lara Merritt chipped in seven.
The Bears will also face Metro State in an exhibition game on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7:05 p.m. before beginning play in the preseason WNIT at New Mexico on Nov. 13.
