BOULDER, Colo. -- Northern Colorado's women's tennis team saw its second action of the fall season on Friday, Sept. 19, at the Colorado Invitational.

And the Bears struggled a bit against a pretty talented field in Air Force, Illinois, Virginia Tech and Wyoming.

All the Northern Colorado players lost in their initial singles meetings and only freshmen Jennifer Whateley and Jill Kappel were able to end the tournament with a win.

Whateley, after losing to Tech's Courtney Rauscher in the first round of the Silver bracket, defeated Wyoming's Virginia Iwinski 6-3, 7-6(2) in the Silver consolation bracket.

The story was similar for Kappel, who lost in a Silver first-round match to the Hokies' Katie Blow but later knocked off Wyoming's Carolina Chaix 6-1, 6-1 in the consolation.

The Bears had their most success in doubles play, where their No. 1 team of Tabatha Knop and Manuela Santos started Ralphie bracket play with a victory against Tech's Shannon Betts and Blow, 8-5.

They later lost, though, to Illinois' Amy Allin and Marisa Lambropoulos 8-4.
