Bears Drop First Game Against Bryant
Sydney VanderVeldeIn the first game of the 2008 season, the University of Northern
Colorado soccer team was taken to overtime by Bryant, falling 3-2
in extra periods.
Bryant came to Greeley having played in three exhibition games
in August, while the Bears were in their first contest of the year.
The Bears move to 0-1-0 on the season, while Bryant improves to
1-0-0.
In the scoreless first half the Bears outshot Bryant 8-1 with
four on goal. Freshmen Kirsten Salminen, who started in goal for
Northern Colorado, saw little action in the first half with zero
saves leaving the game tied at 0-0 going into half-time.
The first goal in the game came in the second half when junior
Sydney Vander Velde received the assist from sophomore Katey Borman
and got past Bryant goalkeeper Katie Mitchell at 54:34. That was
soon followed by an unassisted goal by Vander Velde at 60:16.
The Bulldogs struck back with two quick late goals, first from
Brook Duchaney at 79:57. Duchaney scored on a rebound after a
corner kick. Second to score for Bryant was Alex DiPippo who was
assisted by Sarah Donovan at 82:27. At the end of the second half
the match was tied at two.
Before the overtime period, the bears outshot Bryant 16-6 with
five shots provided by senior Jessica Zimmerman.
Northern Colorado was able to get two shots in the 10 minute
overtime period, but with only 15 seconds left Kaitlyn Hinck had a
clear shot at the goal and made the game winning shot for the
Bulldogs.
Northern Colorado will move on to face the Air Force Falcons at
1 p.m. on Sunday at Jackson Stadium.
