Schroeder Again Hits Career-High To Lead Women To 70-60 Win At Weber State

OGDEN, Utah - The University of Northern Colorado women's basketball team won its second road game of the season and evened its Big Sky Conference record at 1-1 with a 70-60 victory at Weber State. The Bears are now 7-8 on the year, while the Wildcats fall to 6-7 overall and 0-1 in league action.

 

Junior guard Jamie Schroeder, for the fourth game in a row, notched a career-high in scoring with 28 points on 10-of-12 shooting and hit all six free throws. She also grabbed six rebounds and had two steals.

 

Senior center Danielle Hagen notched her second double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman guard Courtney Stoermer added 14 points and a career-high eight assists.

 

Northern Colorado shot .415 from the field and .353 from beyond the arc. They also shot .769 from the free throw line and tied the season-low with just 11 turnovers. Weber State shot .345 from the floor and .308 from the arc and .727 from the free throw line. They also had 37 rebounds, notching the Bears total, to go along with 14 turnovers.

 

Weber State was led by Ahkiah Hunter with 16 points, while Sara Tuomi notched a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Tonya Schnibbe led the Wildcats with five assists and had one of the team's three steals.

 

The Bears took the early 8-3 lead with 15:30 in the first half, with two baskets by Hagen, but Weber State scored eight of the next 11 points to tie the score at 11-11 at the 10:09 mark. The Wildcats continued their run, scoring five of the next seven to take a 17-13 lead with 7:19 remaining. A bucket by Luhring brought the Bears within two and then Schroeder took over, scoring six of the next eight in the contest for the two-point NC lead, 21-19 at 2:41. Tuomi knotted the score for the fourth time at 21 all, but the Bears scored the final nine of the half, including a three-pointer by Cooper for the 30-21 halftime lead. Schroeder scored 15 points for the Bears, while Hagen added six points and six rebounds.

 

Northern Colorado added six more to its total to start the second half with two more baskets by Schroeder for a 15-0 run and a 15-point lead, 36-21. Weber State battled to score eight of the next 10 and cut the NC lead to single digits, 38-29 at 13:29. The Wildcats could get no closer however, as the Bears hit 14 of 18 free throws in the second half to secure the 70-60 victory.

 

The Bears now have a break in action until Jan. 17 when they host Eastern Washington at Butler-Hancock. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
