THE WEEK AHEAD: The UNC women's softball team (13-15 overall, 3-4 North Central Conference) head back into North Central Conference action this weekend with a doubleheader on Friday at South Dakota (1 pm) and the NCC North-South Tournament II in Brookings, S.D., on Saturday and Sunday. UNC will battle St. Cloud State (Sat. - 9 am), North Dakota (Sat. - 11 am), North Dakota (Sat. - 2 pm), South Dakota State (Sat. - 2 pm), Minnesota State (Sun. - 10 am) and North Dakota State (Sun. - Noon). All times listed are Mountain.

UNC SWEEPS CU-COLORADO SPRINGS: The Bears traveled to Colorado Springs last Wednesday and swept a doubleheader from the Mountain Lions. UNC received pitching victories from Stephani Miller and Cristin Dumler in the double-dip sweep. Kim Kelly, Terra Paul and Stephani Miller each tallied two runs batted in during the two-game set.

BEARS BEGIN NCC PLAY AT 3-4: UNC will continue NCC play this weekend at South Dakota and at South Dakota State as a part of the NCC North-South Tournament. The Bears hosted NCC North-South Tournament I on April 12-13 and went 2-3. UNC lost the opener to Minnesota State (6-2), but bounced back with a pair of victories over No. 3-ranked North Dakota State (9-4) and St. Cloud State (6-4). UNC then struggled on Sunday suffering a pair of losses to North Dakota (2-0) and South Dakota State (3-1). The Bears sit at 3-4 in the NCC action.

BEARS LOSE A ROSTER PLAYER: Sophomore transfer Lindsay Haun has voluntariy quite the softball team for personal reasons. Haun was leading the team in batting with a .350 average and 17 runs scored. Haun transferred to UNC from Colorado State.

FINALLY SOME SUPPORT: Senior pitcher Cristin Dumler went into last week's doubleheader against CU-Colorado Springs with a 3-8 overall record. However, that record was deceiving because Dumler had received only nine runs of support in her eight losses. Dumler received some much needed offense in the Bears' 4-1 triumph over the Mountain Lions. Dumler is now 4-8 on the season with a 2.44 earned run average and leads the team in strikeouts with 38.

.300 OR BETTER: The Bears boast of four hitters batting above .300 going into this week's action. Kim Kelly (.314), Terra Paul (.312), Erin Peterson (.312) and Rachel Van Hook (.302) lead the Bears' in batting in 2003.

UP NEXT: After this weekend's NCC action the Bears' regular season will be complete. UNC will then compete in the NCC postseason championship on May 2-3 at a site to be determined.

THE HEAD COACH: Linda Witt is in her third season as the head coach of the UNC softball squad. During her tenure with the Bears, Witt has turned the squad into a contender for the North Central Conference championship. Witt was named the Co-Coach of the Year in 2002 after leading the Bears to a 28-18 overall mark and an 11-5 record in league action. Witt has compiled an overall mark of 54-51 in this her third season as the Bears' head coach.
