The Bears are coming off a 12-28 season last year in their first year of a full Division I schedule. The win total was a six game improvement from the 2004 record of 6-32.

Northern Colorado returns 11 players - six are starters. The Bears welcome seven newcomers. Among the newbies is junior transfer pitcher Shea Carpenter. Carpenter was a 2005 NFCA NJCAA All-American after going 26-6 with a 1.81 ERA. The Bears also welcome freshman Hillarie Van Otterloo, who was a 2005 All-Colorado selection from Broomfield High School. Both Carpenter and Van Otterloo will share starting pitching duties this season.

The Bears also return sophomore outfielder Mackenzie Barrett, who was a 2005 Division I All-Independent selection. Barrett hit .317 with 16 RBI and five home runs. Barrett also has a good glove, as she recorded nine assists and 42 putouts.

Casey Hogue is another returning player that hit at least .300 last season. The junior outfielder hit .300 with 16 RBI and blasted five home runs. She is also a threat on the basepaths, as she stole four bases last season.

Northern Colorado is 3-2 all-time in opening games under head coach Linda Witt. The Bears have never faced any of the teams at the Lion Classic.

The Bears have just two home regular season games this season. They will host the Division II Regis Rangers on April 18 at Butler-Hancock Softball Field in a doubleheader. The only other time Northern Colorado will be at home is April 28-29, when the Bears host the Division I Independent Tournament. Northern Colorado will play a total of 41 games on the road.
