April 30, 2006
GREELEY, Colo. - The South Dakota State University softball team fell behind 3-0 early to Utah Valley State but rallied for four runs in the fourth inning on its way to a 4-3 victory over the Wolverines and a claim of third place at the 2006 Division I Independent Softball Tournament.
Utah Valley State (14-34) struck first, as Rachel Hartgrove hit a solo home run in the first inning, her sixth round tripper of the season. The Wolverines extended that lead to 2-0 in the second when Sara Roskelley executetd a sacrifice bunt, but on the throw to first base, SDSU pitcher Jenna Martson threw the ball behind first base, allowing Laurin Eppich to score all the way from first base.
UVSC's lead reached its zenith in the top of the fourth when Roskelley tripled and came home to score on a RBI-single by Jackie Roberts.
But the bottom of the inning proved to be the difference, as South Dakota State (21-32) loaded the bases thanks to a hit by pitch, single and walk and Chris Pesqueira then singled home a pair of runs to cut the lead to one. The next batter, Kassy Hernandez, singled to left field, plating the tying run and an error on UVSC left fielder Chris Jimenez scored Stacey Evans to give SDSU a lead it would not relinquish.
Jenna Martson was the winning pitcher, allowing six hits and three runs in four innings. Kim Westendorf came on to save the game, pitching the final three innings and allowing only three hits.
