Barnes Hits Two Home Runs But Softball Falls 7-4 to North Dakota State
April 29, 2006
GREELEY, Colo. - Senior Aubrey Barnes hit two home runs and drove in three runs but it was not enough as the University of Northern Colorado softball team dropped a 7-4 decision to North Dakota State on the second day of the 2006 Division I Independent Softball Tournament.
After Northern Colorado (11-33) fell behind 4-0 early, Barnes led off the fifth inning with a solo shot to put her team on the board.
Unfortunately the Bears pitching allowed North Dakota State (23-28) to score three times in the top of the seventh inning, or the game would have been much different.
Trailing 7-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Barnes hit her second blast of the day, and fourth of the season, plating two runs and pulling the Bears to withing four runs. Astrid Yestness would later come around to score on an error but Kelsey Dumler flied out and Mackenzie Barrett struck out to end the game.
The loss was the Bears second in three games at the event, as they ended up the No. 3 seed entering the Bracket Play part of the championship. North Dakota State improved to 2-1 and earned the No. 1 seed.
Allison Bakke (4-3) went the distance for the Bison, allowing seven hit and four runs while striking out six.
Hillarie Van Otterloo (2-12) took the loss, allowing five hits and three runs.
Barnes led the Bears offensively, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Amber Garrett was 2-for-4 with three RBI for NDSU.
