Softball Splits With Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. - The University of Northern Colorado softball team beat the WAC's Lousiana Tech 6-4 in the second game of a doubleheader after dropping the first game 3-1 at the Techster Softball Complex on Sunday.
The Bears (8-30) were led offensively by outfielder Mackenzie Barrett, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the second contest. It was Northern Colorado's first-ever win over a school from Louisiana.
Game one turned out to be a battle of the arms, as LTU's Krissi Oliver pitched a complete game and gave up one run. Shea Carpenter matched Oliver pitch-for-pitch, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings and giving up two hits.
The Lady Techsters put three runs on the board in the first two innings, started by LTU's Regan Clark hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first. LTU's Danielle Sheridan drove in two runs in the second innings when she hit a single to center field.
Northern Colorado struck back in the top of the fourth when sophomore Ashley Geist hit an RBI single to center that drove in junior Kelsey Dumler. But it was all the Bears could muster in the game, as they went scoreless in the remaining innings.
Freshman Hillarie Van Otterloo picked up the loss for the Bears after giving up eight hits and three runs.
In the first two innings of the second game, the Lady Techsters continued their momentum, as they picked up runs in the first and second inning.
But the Bears came back to tie it at two in the top of the third when Dumler drove home junior Casey Hogue on a squeeze bunt. Barrett then doubled to left field, driving home Jessica Milligan. Northern Colorado went on to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Geist hit an RBI double to left field that drove in sophomore Jennifer Huston.
Barrett extended Northern Colorado's lead to 4-2 in the top of the sixth when she drove in senior Aubrey Barnes on a single to right.
Louisiana Tech knotted it at four in the bottom of the inning when Clark blasted a two-run home run.
The Bears did not show any sign of giving up, as they answered the challenge in the top of the seventh with two more runs. Sophomore Heather Beffert started the scoring when she scored on a fielder's choice. Hogue followed it up with an RBI single that drove in Van Otterloo.
Milligan then shut the door on the Lady Techster's in the bottom of the seventh to put the finishing touches on a complete game victory.
Northern Colorado will continue its trip throught the Bayou with a doubleheader on Monday against Grambling State beginning at 3 p.m. mountain time.
