UNC Softball Squad Drops a Pair of Extra-Inning Contests at Regis

Box Score - Game 1 | Box Score - Game 2

DENVER, Colo. -- The University of Northern Colorado softball team fell victim to a pair of late-inning rallies from the host Regis Rangers on Thursday afternoon. The Rangers scored a pair of extra-inning wins at UNC's expense. Regis won game one, 7-6, and then took game two, 5-4.

GAME ONE
The Bears' Whitney Platten did everything she could do at the plate and set a UNC single-game record with five hits in five at-bats.

Platten guided the Bears to a 4-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. However, the Bears could not stop the Rangers and Regis posted two runs to force extra innings.

Still the Bears appeared to be in good shape by plating two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

But the Rangers would not be denied and rallied for two runs off of starter Stephani Miller to tie the game at 6-6. UNC reliever Danelle Sayler could not slow down the Rangers' offense. Sayler gave up a bases loaded single with two outs in the ninth to allow the Rangers to take the contest.

Platten was also credited with two RBI in the contest to tie for the team lead with senior transfer Brooke Boyer. Boyer netted two hits and Nicole Martinez also tallied two base knocks.

Sayler dropped to 0-6 with the loss.

GAME TWO
The Bears tried to forget about game one and moved onto game two where the UNC squad took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

However, just like game one, the Rangers rallied for a pair of runs off starter Stacey Moon to knot the game at 3-3 and force extra innings.

UNC added a single run in the top of the eighth on back-to-back doubles from Stephani Miller and Erin Peterson. But the Rangers refused to give the Bears any ground and rallied again with a single run to force the game into the ninth inning.

The Rangers stymied the Bears in the top of the ninth and had a chance to win the game in the bottom stanza. Regis was able to get a run off UNC reliever Danelle Sayler in the ninth with a one-out single that plated the winning run.

UNC's offense was led by Miller (2-3, 3 runs, 1 RBI) and Peterson (2-4, 2 RBI, 1 run). Sayler took the loss to drop to 0-7 on the season.

NOTES: The Bears will now travel to Colorado State next Tuesday for a doubleheader with the Rams at 1 p.m. in Fort Collins ...
