Northern Colorado Edges Butler and George Mason at Rebel Games

ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Northern Colorado softball team bounced back into form with a pair of victories in its first day at the Rebel Spring Games. The Bears notched wins over Butler University and George Mason University.

 

Northern Colorado 6, Butler 5

The Bears began the day with a late rally to score a 6-5 win over the Butler Bulldogs. Northern Colorado trailed 5-4 entering the bottom of the sixth but came away with a single run in the sixth and another run in the seventh to win it.

 

In the sixth, Kati Miller led off with a double and head coach Linda Witt then inserted Nicole Martinez in as a pinch runner. Ashley Martinosky singled to move Martinez to third. Martinez then scored on a passed ball to knot the game at 5-5.

 

The Bears then won it in the seventh when starting pitcher Kelsey Dumler led off with a triple. The Bulldogs then intentionally walked both Casey Hogue and Whitney Platten to load the bases. The Bulldogs got Stephani Miller to hit into a fielder's choice and got Dumler out at the plate. But Martinez came through in the clutch with a hit into the game that scored Hogue to plate the winning run.

 

Dumler worked a complete game to earn her fourth win of the season. Platten went 2-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI. Morgan Dahlman scored two runs and had a triple. Hogue notched a pair of stolen bases to go along with two RBI in the victory.

Northern Colorado 9, George Mason 4

The Bears made their offense as easy as 1-2-3 in the second win of the day. Northern Colorado tallied a 9-4 victory over the George Mason Patriots.

 

Hogue led off the game with a home run. Platten followed with a double and then scored on Dahlman's triple. Heather Beffert earned a walk to put runners on first and third. Witt then called for a double steal and it worked to perfection as Dahlman scored from third and gave the Bears 3-0 lead after one inning of play.

 

The Bears' fifth inning worked very similarly to the first. Hogue led off with a single. Platten then plated Hogue with an RBI double. Platten scored on another RBI double from Dahlman. Beffert closed out the scoring for the Bears in the inning with an RBI single to score Dahlman.

 

Northern Colorado scored its final three runs in the seventh courtesy of the same trio. Hogue led off with a single and scored on an RBI double from Platten. Platten then crossed the plate after an RBI double from Dahlman. Dahlman moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from Beffert.

 

Stephani Miller worked the complete game for her second victory of the season.

NOTES: Northern Colorado will take on Tennessee-Martin (2:20 p.m. - Eastern) and Youngstown State (4:10 p.m. - Eastern) on Monday as the Rebel Games continue ... The Bears committed only three errors total in the two games after committing nine errors in a doubleheader loss to Regis on Wednesday in the home opener ... on the day Dahlman wnet 5-for-7 with 5 runs, 2 triples, 2 doubles, 2 RBI and 2 stolen bases ... Platten also went 5-for-7 with 5 doubles, three RBI ... Hogue went 4-for-7 with 3 RBI, 2 stolen bases and a home run.
